A Look at The Implications of Real Time Data

When building systems to handle Real-Time or Streaming Data, we need to look at some architectural elements differently. We cannot rely on the patterns of the past, but we can learn from the mistakes and successes of others! In this episode we explore some of the key considerations when designing software to handle real-time data.

A Quick Tour of Partner Services in Pivotal Cloud Foundry

One of the great things about Pivotal Cloud Foundry is how easy it is for 3rd parties to add in new capabilities. In particular, by using the Operations Manager to easily import, install and expose new services to users of the platform. In this episode we look at some of the new services available including products for source control, artefact repositories, log management and more!

Data, Why Did It Have To Be Data?

In this episode, Coté once again chats with Andrew Clay Shafer about the sundry challenges of transforming to a cloud native enterprise. We start talking about the changing focus we're seeing among Pivotal customers: moving up the stack from infrastructure to the application layers. Then we discuss the difficulties of handling the data layer, and wrap-up with some change management tactics for getting the "rank and file" inspired and bought into the cloud native lifestyle.

All About Greenplum Database

It is an exciting time for customers using data-related software - with more data being processed an analysed than ever. To do this effectively you need some heavy duty technology. And one of the best for a long time has been the Greenplum database. Now, this database is available as Open Source - giving customers even more flexibility, and enabling a flourishing community of developers and contributors. In this episode we explore more about what this means and how you can be a part of it.

Moving Up the Stack, Talking Pivotal Cloud Foundry 1.6 with James Watters

With a new version of Pivotal Cloud Foundry out, I wanted to catch up with James Watters to discuss what our customers are up to. We discuss the focus on application architecture and development that we've been seeing out in the field. Last we talked, much of the focus was on the infrastructure layer, and while this release has plenty of that, Spring Boot and Spring Cloud are some of the more interesting features in this release. So, we discuss the more developer centric context that Pivotal Cloud Foundry is running around in now.

Developing modern software emphasises loosely coupled services, resilience, ease of scaling and the like. But these attributes do not "come for free". How do you handle things like service discovery, configuration management and the tolerance of service failures?

Fortunately, services to do just that for Spring applications are now an "out of the box" part of Pivotal Cloud Foundry. In this episode, we dive a little deeper into each service.

Operations Has Plenty To Do In A Cloud Native Enterprise, talking with Bridget Kromhout

From sleepy storage admin jobs to MongoDB, there’s no end of jobs operations people can be doing now-a-days. Fresh of many years being an operations person, Bridget Kromhout (@bridgetkromhout), now at Pivotal, talks with me in this episode about DevOps and operations. We discuss the opportunities operations people have in a Cloud Native world, moving to and from management, organization change management, being “promoted” to management, and, of course, USENET.

Talking DevOps ROI with the Finance Department

A short while ago, [I wrote up how to approach doing ROI cases for DevOps](http://blog.pivotal.io/pivotal-cloud-foundry/features/3-ways-to-talk-your-w…). The catch, of course, was that doing ROI for DevOps is often the wrong "question." That said, we all live in the real world, so you need to tell the finance people, let alone your management chain, something if they're asking you to justify a decision.

To follow-up on the piece, I called up my old friend Ed Goodwin, a programmer friend of mine who went and got an MBA and entered a whole new career in finance. I asked him to walk me through how you'd think about doing the ROI for something like DevOps and, more broadly, how to work with finance people who are curious about new IT processes like DevOps and cloud native. He gives some excellent, pragmatic advice. As always, it always helps to just talk with people, even if they're from finance.

Cloud Foundry Plugins for the Lazy Developer

I often say that the best developer is a lazy developer. Not because they do not like to do work, but they hate doing the same thing over and over. After all, that is why we created computers in the first place!

One of the many strengths of Cloud Foundry is the open ecosystem that it promotes. This manifests in many ways, one of which is the CLI Plug-In architecture. This enables anyone to contribute great ideas into the CLI in a stable and extensible way.

In this episode we explore the creation of these plugins and sample some of the cool ones available!

  • How fear of Silicon Valley “marauders” drives the need to change - interestingly, high up the management people are more paranoid, but lower down, people are not so paranoid. They discuss what kind of disconnect this creates in the organization.

  • The discussion then moves to solving for this disconnect in the organization. Among other things, Matt suggests that leadership needs to create and communicate a vision and strategy.

  • Also discussion of how open source is helping AllState focus on the right things instead of building platforms.

Unleash the Chaos Lemur!!

In IT we have long worked hard to ensure that systems remain available, stable and "up". But the manner in which we achieve this outcome has changed. Gone are the days of trying to engineer failure "out of the system" - as that proved to be beyond human capability. Rather, by turning the problem on its head and accepting that failure happens - we can tolerate them better.

This means better systems, higher availability - and more sleep!

In this episode we look into a new open-source project called Chaos Lemur that can help make your systems more resilient, by testing them constantly.

You are going to need a platform, operational concerns of the third platform

In this episode, Andrew and Coté talk about one of his works in progress, a short essay on the operational needs of a cloud platform.

The list so far is:

  1. role based access to resources- the right people should be able to do things and the wrong people shouldn’t

  2. run specified bits on demand - take code, put it together with all the rest of the things it needs and get it running

  3. coordinate cross service configurations - in a service oriented world, services need to be configured to connect with each other

  4. route public requests to running bits the next big thing needs access to the Internet

  5. read and write persistent data - data has to live somewhere

  6. add and remove resources - scaling is a great problem to have, but still

  7. record internal and external events - keep track of what changed, when and by who

  8. isolate resources and failures - without isolation and decoupling, that is one big distributed single point of failure

  9. measure performance/health - can’t manage what you don’t measure

  10. detect and determine failure - sometimes, things get real… but how do you know

  11. recover failures someone is going to have to clean this mess

  12. work tomorrow - when everything you’ve thought to be true has been shown not to be
